A bird's paradise shrouded in fog Coban, where the Aurora Plantation is located, is located about 150 km north of the capital Guatemala City. It is said that there are 179 species of birds, including endemic species, and it is truly a bird's paradise. What is carefully protected by the local residents of Koban is the "Kubiwaki Nuban Plover". It is a very beautiful and colorful bird with a red belly and a white and black border line. It is affectionately called "Aurora" locally. The name of the aurora plantation also comes from here. Farm management with a small environmental impact Originally a farm created in 1887 by German immigrants, it was taken over by the current owner, Aldo, in 2014. Varieties of coffee such as Katura, Marago Zippe, Geisha, and Pacamara are grown in the park. The characteristic of Aurora Farm is that it is committed to farm management with a low impact on the environment. Due to the local nature of Coban, the farm uses abundant rainwater, and hydroelectric power generation and solar power generation cover the electricity used in the park. What Aldo and Lucia aim for Aldo's goal is to "cultivate farmers who are financially independent and can grow coffee as a business." It is said that income and poverty disparities between regions and ethnicities are widening in Guatemala. Malnutrition, low school attendance, and low literacy rates are the main causes, especially in rural areas with many indigenous people. The regional city of Koban also faces these challenges. "Guatemalans are hard workers, but their opportunities to play an active role are limited, so they decided to contribute to the local community by paying a fair price to coffee producers and to enable farmers to live a better life." That's how the project called "Aurora Studio" began. In order to eliminate poverty from the land in Koban, a portion of the sales are used to install water filters, solar panels, stoves, etc. necessary for coffee production, and give back fairly to farmers. We have expanded the circle of these initiatives and have been involved with more than 50 farmers so far. "To love Guatemala, to help others."
