Minabe Town (formerly Nanbu Town) in Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture is located in a mountainous area near the sea in the middle of the Kii Peninsula, and since ancient times, plum cultivation has been actively carried out using the slopes of the mountains due to the lack of flat land.
From the 25th to the 30th year of the Showa era, the "Umema Mother Tree Survey Committee" was established in the former Kaminami Village to pray for the revival of industry after the war and to introduce excellent varieties. Mr. Katsutaro Takenaka, a teacher at the local Nanbu High School, was appointed as the chairman of the committee, and under his guidance, the school took the lead in conducting the survey. From 114 individuals selected from each region, six excellent varieties were selected over a period of five years, and the one that was particularly excellent was "Minamiko".
