The production base of the chopsticks is located in the West Bank, and we commission them from local workshops through local fair trade organizations. Some of the craftsmen are professionals, while others are self-employed in the tourism industry, and for those people, when the number of tourists decreased sharply due to the Corona disaster, woodworking became an important source of income.
Olive processing is a local tradition and pride that has been passed down from generation to generation. "I want to try something new in order to inherit the tradition," he said, and made "chopsticks with olive blossoms" that the craftsman had never used. Palestinian embroidery, which has a deep history, and small items made from textiles that have been used in everyday life, such as ethnic costumes, are mainly designed from scratch by Aisha, a female entrepreneur who lives in the area.
One day, I saw Aisha's work on Instagram and fell in love with the exquisite sense of balance and color of traditional textiles that incorporate upcycling. It takes a lot of courage to run your own business under occupation, and by a single woman.
The design is not too flashy with a strong Palestinian feel, but we want it to be soft and easy to fit in with life in Japan.
Aisha designed, selected the fabric and color, and cut it according to the product model. The cuts are sent to the women who work on them for embroidery and sewing.
In Palestine, which has been under occupation for a long time, it is considered that the most important thing for both men and women is to have intangible property, so while many families are passionate about education, if they cannot find a job, they need to find their own livelihood. As a result, many of them are skilled in handicrafts, and some of the workers are women who live in refugee camps.
When it is finished, Aisha checks the quality of the product and the finished part. Since we are particular about manufacturing from scratch and do not compromise on the finish, the number of items delivered at one time is small, and it is a valuable item that arrives only about 50 items in one year.
About the arrival of products
Since it is a small-lot production, we order several times a year in bulk to meet domestic needs. However, it is common for deliveries to be delayed due to restrictions on activities under the permanent occupation or differences in cultural thinking. I don't know how many times I've thought, "How much easier it would be if we could manufacture in Japan," but that doesn't make sense, so we're always looking for ways to get the timing right and purchase while meeting the needs of buyers.
Currently, the arrival of out-of-stock products will not come in for the time being, but if it goes smoothly, it seems that the overall arrival will be realized in January next year. In addition, the production of new products such as animal-shaped plates and pasta forks is also progressing. It is encouraging for the local community that there are people waiting for the product, so we hope to meet buyers who will have a long-term relationship.

In Palestine, when you go to the countryside, there are almost no foreigners, let alone Japan, so if you walk alone, you will be called out in various ways. They helped me when I couldn't read a map and got lost, they gave me coffee when we were waiting, and they gave me flowers from a flower shop to welcome me from a distant Japan. You can see the smiles of people who are generous and service-minded.
