When he was a university student, he was deeply shocked by the apartheid problem in South Africa, and became interested in human rights and poverty issues in developing countries. After working as a backpacker and as a graduate school researcher, he worked as a general merchandise buyer for about four years before founding the fair trade shop "Sisam Kobo" in Kyoto in 1999. 「What you buy is what you vote.
