■About Sri Lankan elephants
The Sri Lankan elephant, a subspecies of the Asian elephant, is the largest of the Asian elephants and has darker body colors, with depigmented skin spots on the ears and face, nose and abdomen. As its name suggests, the Sri Lankan elephant was found on the island of Sri Lanka, but it is believed that it originally arrived from South India. Sri Lankan elephants used to roam the island, but as much of nature has been turned into crop fields, their habitat is now limited to a few designated national parks.
Sri Lankan elephants feed on a variety of plants, including grass, leaves, shoots, bark, fruits, nuts, and seeds. And their long noses help them gather such food.
