A man named Yamanaka lacquerware
Lacquerware, a traditional craft that Japan is proud of, has continued to fascinate people with its beauty and delicacy. We, Yamanaka lacquerware, are called "Kiji no Yamanaka" along with "Wajima of Paint" and "Kanazawa of Makie" in Ishikawa Prefecture, and are loved by many people because of their high quality.
Yamanaka lacquerware is characterized by its philosophy of making use of the material of "wood" itself, and the high level of technology that realizes it. The cutting of materials called vertical wood removal is unique to Yamanaka even in Japan. By cutting from the tree according to the natural flow without prioritizing efficiency, the strength is increased and the grind is more delicate. And you can also see the tree rings, which are living proof of the tree, beautifully. Of particular note is the grinding of the wheel. By combining the traditional technique of grinding by hand with the modern technology of steel lathes, which use blades sharpened by craftsmen themselves, mass production has become possible. The "wood" that we work on supports the lacquerware industry not only in the mountains but also throughout the country.
Normally, lacquerware involves the division of labor in various processes to create a single product, and involves the hands of many craftsmen. The reality is that the use of valuable technology and the increase in the number of processes naturally make it more expensive, and it has become a "traditional craft luxury product" that has become a part of people's lives. Today, the vessels of our daily lives have been replaced by easy-to-obtain and uniform chemical materials.
At Takumi Head Lacquer, we make full use of the technology, knowledge, and experience we have cultivated, and aim to create "familiar" and "everyday" vessels that can be used by as many people as possible to pick up "wood" and be close to their daily lives. In order to achieve this, we are promoting new initiatives from various angles, such as the quality of the wood material itself, unit price, design, and usage.
