Kikai Island is located in the northeastern part of Amami Oshima. Sesame seeds have been cultivated on this island since ancient times. 99.9% of the sesame seeds distributed in Japan are produced overseas. Kikai Island produces almost all of the precious 0.1% domestic sesame seeds. After harvesting, the sesame seeds are dried in the sun for about a week. During the peak of the sesame harvest in late July ~ early September, sesame seeds are dried all over the island, and the scenery is called "Sesame Street" in various parts of the island.
