■About the European hedgehog
European hedgehogs are found throughout Europe. They live in a variety of places, including forests and grasslands, and often live on man-made lands such as orchards, vineyards, farmland, parks, and gardens.
The European hedgehog grows up to about 30 cm in length and, although it is difficult to tell at first glance, has a tail of about 5 cm. All species of hedgehogs have about 7000 spines with a length of 2 cm to 3 cm, covered except for the belly. These characteristic spines are not poisonous or snag, but are actually thick body hair with a hollow inside, which helps protect against predators when the body is curled up like a ball.
