Well dressing is a long-standing tradition in Derbyshire, England.
Its origins are said to be more than 2000 years ago.
It is a festival that is held every summer and decorates wells in the town with only natural materials as if painting a large picture.
Clay is pasted on a platform with a wooden frame, and petals, leaves, seeds, beans, coffee beans, etc. are used on top of it to decorate it very gorgeously.
The whole town will be brightened with Christian themes, messages praying for peace, and decorations wishing for the development of the region.
The tradition spread in Derbyshire in the 14th century. The plague (Black Death), a plague that swept across Europe, killed more than 30% of the English.
After that, it is said that they began to decorate the well in gratitude for the clean water of the plague-plagued era.
While appreciating the importance of water, we were able to enjoy the change of seasons, and we were able to make a well dressing that is typical of HOiSUM.
