Redefining the value of island sake and connecting it to the future
The reason why we promote the "ZAININ" brand is to convey the "treasure" charm of the Izu Islands to the world through the form of shochu.
Since Vincent, the representative, visited the island for the first time 15 years ago, what fascinated him was the wild but beautiful nature created by the volcano and the powerful island sake culture that lived there.
However, such high quality, unique terroir, and the story behind it have not yet been fully recognized and appreciated in mainland Japan, including Tokyo.
The origin of this brand is the desire to create sake that conveys the terroir of the island, manufacturing, and the history of the exiles.

Another major motivation is the lack of successors that the islands are facing.
The loss of craftsmen with excellent skills and the severance of traditions is nothing but the loss of Japan's cultural assets.
We want to elevate soju not just into an alcoholic beverage, but into a "craft spirit full of history and romance" like Scotch whiskey or rum.
We continue this activity to move the hearts of the younger generation and overseas consumers with the power of stories, to pass on the passion of the creators to the next generation, and to open up a future where people gather on the island itself.

What are we doing?

Communicating the charm of the island's history, culture, and manufacturing
We aim to establish ourselves as a comprehensive brand that transmits the charm of the Izu Islands beyond mere product development.
At its core, it is a deep relationship of trust with the long-established Sakashita Sake Brewery, Mr. Okiyama.
This story began when Vincent, the representative, resonated with Mr. Okiyama's dedication to sake brewing and the challenge of looking to the future of the island. When starting the project, we first started with thorough "historical research". Together with a writer known for his research on the Edo period, he spent several months researching the folklore of Hachijojima, and set the spirituality of how the "sinners" who were once exiled to this area supported each other and built their own culture with the islanders.

As for specific activities, we not only brew sake that is particular about Hachijojima's raw materials, but also cooperate with sensitive bars, hotels, and restaurants all over Japan to promote products that make you want to talk about them.
In the future, we are also considering the development of sake and food products using the specialties of the Izu Seven Islands, and we are working to build a platform that directly contributes to the revitalization of the local economy, such as agricultural support and tourism promotion starting from sake brewing.
We shed light on the process of manufacturing by "human hands" and continue to disseminate its value both domestically and internationally.

Commitment to the product

A unique golden ratio that encapsulates the terroir of a volcanic island
The theme of the product design of "Sinner" is the embodiment of "the terroir of Hachijojima" and "the uniqueness of a volcanic island".
The biggest feature is, potatoes and barley in a ratio of "5:5"It is a bold blend that is not bound by preconceived notions.
Okiyama Toji grows his own sweet potatoes that go well with the soil, "Satsuma Masari".
By combining this with barley koji, the plump sweetness of the sweet potato and the savory roasting sensation of the barley overlap, creating a complex aroma that combines gorgeous and depth.
After many trial productions, we have arrived at the ultimate balance that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people with a clean finish while retaining the strong personality typical of island sake.

We also paid attention to the design to express the history and terroir of Hachijojima.
[Label]
The word "sin", which is the core of the brand, is strongly put at the forefront. This character is designed with the motif of "prison and driftwood" and symbolizes the vitality of our ancestors who survived severe adversity. The back label is designed to tell the story and bring out the island's scene and history every time you take a sip of it.
[Bottle]
The ink-colored glass is designed to remind us of the lava of Hachijojima.

Through all of your senses of taste, smell, and sight, you can experience the energy of the volcanic island, making it a one-of-a-kind craft spirit.

Who are supporting us?

"Sinner" is supported not only by traditional shochu fans, but also by a wide range of people who are looking for a new food experience. The thick and powerful taste full of minerality goes well with not only island cuisine, but also fatty dishes such as pork, Chinese food, and fried foods. It refreshes your mouth, so you can enjoy it regardless of genre as a meal drink that invites you to take your next sip. Of particular note is the response from modern restaurants such as "Italian × shochu" and "French × shochu" that offer unprecedented modern pairings. Like wine and whiskey, the depth that allows you to enjoy the marriage with food, and the unique sharpness reminiscent of the minerality derived from lava stimulate the creativity of chefs and sommeliers.

Its sleek design and deep narrative have also won the hearts of the younger generation who prefer craft beer and craft gin. The preconceived notion of "uncle's drink" has been eliminated, and "sinner" has been accepted as a cool spirit that gives a sense of historical romance. In addition, it is highly supported by inbound tourists who want to learn more about Japan's unique culture and overseas spirits lovers, as well as its rarity and regional characteristics. From shochu beginners to seasoned shochu lovers, the brand is proud to be chosen not just as a sake, but by those who enjoy the "story" behind a drink.
