We want to solve the problem of marine plastics from Aizu

In 2019, I met Michio Komatsu, a leading expert in bioplastic molding, and learned that 80% of marine garbage is land garbage flowing down rivers.
So much from inland? I was wrong. As the snow melted, the garbage stood out, and when I picked it up, it took about 30 minutes to fill three garbage bags. I was shocked that this was the reality.

Is it possible to solve the problem of marine plastics from Aizu? We are a company that molds plastic to make tableware. I thought that if I could contribute to the problem of marine litter, I could open up the future, and if I used PLA (polylactic acid), a material that returns to the soil at our molding factory, I could develop products with "biodegradable plastics" that can be biodegraded, detoxified, and returned to the earth by the power of nature.
Based on the idea of "making items that can be used on a daily basis with biodegradable plastic!", we want to develop environmentally friendly products that are closely related to our daily lives.

What are we doing?
Delivering bioplastic materials to the daily lives of many people

R+E uses a bioplastic material called PLA (polylactic acid), which is derived from starch and lactic acid bacteria from sugarcane and corn, with the aim of reducing the burden on the environment and continuing to live as we currently have.
We went through trial and error to reduce the amount of petroleum-derived plastic content as much as possible and commercialize it. PLA is vulnerable to heat, and it is difficult to commercialize it as it is. For this reason, a small amount of additives were added to adjust the ingredients to make it a heat-resistant material, and we succeeded in developing a product with 94% plant-derived ingredients. I was delighted when the shape of the product was completed during development.

PLA is made from plant materials, but its strength and usability are almost the same as petroleum-based plastics. The biggest feature is that it is a biodegradable plastic. Under certain conditions, such as in compost or soil with microorganisms, it will decompose into water and carbon dioxide in about 2~3 months. PLA with high purity is a safe and secure material that is also used for surgical threads. It can also be disposed of as combustible garbage in the same way as paper and wood.
Our mission is to deliver products made from bioplastic materials that return to the soil to the hands of many people so that they can be used as tools in everyday life. In addition, we will continue to address issues such as how to contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to curb climate change and how to contribute to the reduction of marine microplastics.

Commitment to the product
In addition to being a material with a low environmental impact, the R+E tumbler combines beautiful design and functionality.
The overall texture is moist and matte. In addition to the shape, we aimed for a design that allows you to feel the presence of the object, such as the feel and weight when you hold it.
In consideration of ease of drinking, the height of the spout of the lid allows you to drink hot drinks without worrying about burns. In addition, the size of the spout is large so that you can insert a straw and use it. Since it can be opened and closed by turning the part that covers the spout, it is also ideal for use in offices.

The heat-resistant temperature is 55~65°C, which is relatively strong among biodegradable plastics.
The biodegradation rate is fast in compost, and depending on the thickness of the product and other conditions, it will biodegrade in about 2~3 months. It depends on the situation, but it takes about 3~5 years to biodegrade in the soil.
We are particular about the packaging, and do not use plastic inner bags made of petroleum-derived plastic. While taking advantage of the texture of recycled paper, we have designed it so that it can be used as a gift.

Who are supporting us?
The target audience is those who are already working on environmental issues and those who are about to do so. Those who are looking for an excellent design as a My Tumbler.
