■About black bears
Black bears live in the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and parts of East Asia, including Japan. They are omnivorous and eat insects, fruits, nuts, beehives, small mammals, birds, and also carrion. The body is covered with shiny black hairs (some individuals have a brownish tint), and on the chest there is a whitish mark shaped like a crescent. Long, thick hairs on the neck and shoulders form a mane.
During the summer months, black bears live mainly in hills and mountains covered with trees. In autumn, they gain weight, and in winter they spend most of their time sleeping at an altitude of no more than 1500 meters.
