The most famous is the annual ceremony held on the 17th day of the sixth lunar month, one of Japan's three major boat rituals, where a gozabune performing gagaku (gagaku) floats on the sea. TOU's incense holder was specially made by Taigendo, a Miyajima osayaki kiln connected to Itsukushima Shrine. [Taigendo] Taigendo was founded in the first year of Taisho by the first-generation Koya, at Miyajimaguchi, across from Itsukushima Shrine. Since then, throughout its history, it has been designated as an official kiln for Itsukushima Shrine and as a 'Hiroshima Prefecture Traditional Craft.' Even today, the sand pottery at Taigen Hall is made using the sand from the main hall of Itsukushima Shrine, and after prayers, it is kneaded into clay. [Okami Grill] Its origins date back to the Edo period (from 1603). Travelers from Aki Province (present-day western Hiroshima Prefecture) set out carrying sands from the main shrine of Itsukushima Shrine as charms wishing for safety along the way. Once the journey is successfully completed, the custom of 'sand-reversing' is born, where the sand from the destination is added to the talisman's sand, and the sand is doubled before returning to the shrine. During the Tokugawa period, clay mixed with the sand from the main shrine began to be used to make vessels for the festivals of Itsukushima Shrine. Because sacred sand is used, these ceramics are also called 'osa-yaki' or 'Shinsha-yaki' (sacred sand sand ware).
