Name: CHARLIE
Animal species: Koala
Endangered (Red List Rating): VU Criticized Species
■About koalas
Koalas are found throughout eastern and coastal Australia, where they feed on eucalyptus leaves. They are good at climbing because they have strong limbs and sharp claws and thumbs facing each other.
Koalas are nocturnal marsupials that spend most of the day sleeping on the branches of trees, but at night they climb high places and eat a few pounds (1 pound = about 0.45 kg) of eucalyptus leaves.
Newborns weigh less than 1 ounce (about 28.4 grams) and enter the pouch of their mother's stomach on their own and spend up to 7 months there.
Koalas' lives are made up of eucalyptus trees, so they are very susceptible to environmental changes.
