Irma, a visual artist and farmer wife in Limpopo Province, was inspired by the vibrant culture of the Shangaan seasonal workers and wanted to be involved in creating new income for local women and men. In 1988, Kalos embroidery began with five Shangaan women Kalos means blanket, and while sitting on it, they have created embroidery pieces with modern designs based on their own culture and traditions. Kalos revived traditional embroidery among the Shangaan and Northern Sotho peoples, providing creative work and a better life for around 1300 embroidery makers, mainly local women. The name "KAROSS" is written on the front of the tag and "HAND EMBROIDERED SHANGAAN CLOTHS" on the back, which is hand-embroidered by the Shangaan people.
