The technique of cutting out the nacre of a shiny shell and fitting it into lacquer or wood is called raden. We asked a Wajima painting craftsman who is familiar with the technique to paste the shell on the dial. For this dial, I used the shell of the "black butterfly shell" that produces black pearls. The deep, soft gray shellfish shines in various colors such as blue, purple, and pink by changing the viewing angle. By cutting and pasting the shell material into 12 parts, we designed it to create a complex shine and at the same time emphasize the joints of the shell and clearly function as an index indicating time. Because it is handmade, the impression may be slightly different from the product in the photo.
