Regenerate the yacht sail after the voyage. Sustainable manufacturing that also creates employment
At Resail Factory, we are particular about using sails that are no longer needed, but at first we had a hard time getting sails as materials.
The sails of a yacht that has finished sailing will never appear on the market. For more than 10 years, I have been going to pick it up myself when I am approached by a fellow yachtsman, and I have been communicating with them to get them to give it to me.
The sail you received is dismantled by cutting the metal fittings and ends using special scissors. Depending on the size of the sail, it is divided into 5 parts, and the large sail is divided into about 10 parts, and it is cut so that the letters and patterns such as the sail number can be used so that there is no waste. The cut material is washed in the atelier, squirted, bleached, and dried in the shade before being sewed. It takes a lot of work compared to a new sail, but its texture is what makes it taste.
Not all parts of the upcycled sail can be used, so it is put in a bag and brought to a recycling center for incineration, but the disposal part is about 1/30 of the original sail. In recent years, sustainable businesses have been attracting attention, upcycling has become generally known, and people from inside and outside Japan have contacted us to use sails that are no longer needed.
The products are made by combining the efforts of many people living in Shonan. Regarding sewing, my friends in Shonan, who are good at sewing, have been cooperating and giving me advice since the beginning, and some of the processes are helped by the grandmothers of the disabled and silver human resources in Shonan.
In order to convey the appeal of upcycled sails to as many people as possible, we also hold workshops on a regular basis. I would be happy if you could actually see, touch, and make reused sails from yachts and get interested in the sea.
