At one of the exhibitions, we decided to make our own mannequins to display clothes, and the result was the prototype of the prefabricated cardboard mannequin FLATS. At first, it was only a cardboard mannequin, but people who saw the product asked if it was possible to make a dog or cat with a similar structure. And so on, various requests began to come in, and as I responded to them, the number of items increased. Mannequins (humanoids) become animals, animals become character products, become huge or miniature, combine with other products to make packages, robotize, and so on. We will continue to develop products in various fields while responding to requests from the market.

FLATS was created in the classroom of an abandoned elementary school in the mountainous area of the Kunisaki Peninsula in the northeastern part of Oita Prefecture, and traveled around the world. The Kunisaki Peninsula is the birthplace of Shinto Buddhist practice, where a unique mountain Buddhist culture flourished from the Nara period to the Heian period. FLATS is created in the midst of the sacred climate and the relaxing time of the lush green satoyama where nature and humans coexist.
FLATS has two main features. One is that you can freely create forms. The computer-designed parts are cut one by one by a miniature laser machine. Since no molds are required, small-lot production is possible, and the process from design to prototyping and commercialization can be performed in a short period of time. In addition, since the model can be scaled freely, it is possible to produce scaled-down miniatures and large structures. Taking advantage of the features of FLATS, we are developing a miniature craft series. Starting with the animals of the zodiac, we make various characters, dinosaurs, and airplane models.
Another feature of FLATS is that it can be used with a wide variety of materials. Paper, wood, acrylic, metal, and any other plate that can be cut by a laser can be used as a material. In particular, the variety of paper materials can be dramatically expanded by gluing colored paper and printed paper together.

FLATS converts a three-dimensional to two-dimensional and reconstructs it as three-dimensional again. There is another dimension (time) involved. By passing through the sensations of the brain, eyes, fingers, skin, and physical time, I hope to share the Tsukuru experience with as many people as possible.
FLATS do not have a so-called "surface". The part that touches the surface is cut out with a laser, and the cross-section of the corrugated sheet with the internal structure exposed is discontinuous and continuous. The viewer complements the space between these parts with images and recognizes them as a single image. This fictional form is made up of architectural structures that support it, and the balance between form and structure is the most significant feature of FLATS as a product.
