More about the Brand Owner

岡見宏之

HIROYUKI OKAMI

After working as a student in pottery, he joined Fukayama Co., Ltd., a ceramics manufacturer in Gifu Prefecture. He is involved in the development of materials such as shape design, glaze, and soil, and is in charge of product design and sales for each series. In 2012, we launched a product brand that mainly researches glass and ceramic materials and designs tableware. Established POTPURII. When it comes to tableware, we design products not only by coloring, but also by using a wide range of colors, such as the color of the clay, the texture of the glaze, and the pigment of the print. The product line presents both molds for mass production and art pieces that are handmade one by one.

I started making ceramics when I entered university, so I was 18 years old. It all started with a club at university. When I was in college, I worked part-time as a pottery instructor.

When I was a student, my seniors asked me what kind of design I wanted to do, because it is design to create a "shape" like a Utsuwa, and it is also a design to create a "pattern" of a Utsuwa. When I was asked, I couldn't answer well. So, after thinking about it, wouldn't it be better to have a "ceramic designer" that combines both? That's what I thought.
* Works made when I was a student

From there, I went there because I wanted to work as a ceramics designer in Sweden, where there are in-house designers at the kiln and the job of "ceramics designer" is recognized, so as to represent Iittala in Scandinavia. However, Sweden is a welfare state, so I found out that it is difficult to work as a ceramic designer in terms of employment taxes (laughs). However, as I listened to the local stories, I learned that there was a pottery manufacturer in Japan where I could work as a "ceramic designer", so after returning to Japan, I got a job at "Fukayama Co., Ltd." in my hometown of Gifu.
There, he learned the basics of mass production of ceramic tableware and launched his own brand in 2012.

What are we doing?

We manufacture ceramic tableware in our respective kilns in Tokyo and Gifu Prefecture. Products suitable for mass production are made in Gifu Prefecture, and in the case of manufacturing that is close to potters with many manual parts, it is produced at Tokyo Kobo. While developing technologies such as clay, glaze, and firing, I try to create shapes from a different perspective when it comes to design.

I like to look at vintage clothes from overseas and go looking for them.
On the other hand, I sometimes stop by a place that sells a lot of products and see what kind of things they sell.
In order to value the world view of the brand, it is necessary to "express your own taste".
When we first started, we were making products with the theme of "selling" or "easy-to-use." However, I had a strong desire to put something I liked out into the world, and I gradually moved closer to my taste.
However, I am conscious of not making something that no one will use because it is too close to "taste".
I think there is a "comfort" that everyone thinks about in their eating habits. I use the word "easy to accept," but I'm conscious of that. While focusing on "preference", I try to make a container that someone else will use.

Commitment to the product

〇(Vogue)
It is a reprint model designed by ceramic designer Kazuo Yamada and is one of Potperry's popular lines. The round, colorful, and charming figure brightly colors the dining table and creates a fun time. Among them, Bowl S is convenient for single dishes and fruit bowls, Bowl M is perfect as a small bowl, and Bowl L is easy to use for salads and rice bowls. All sizes are designed to be used not only in microwave ovens but also in ovens. It can be combined with other sizes to create a fun daily dish.

〇Cirkus
It is a series that designs patterns with the theme of "circus" and features colorful colored patterns with overglaze vessels.
It consists of three designs: clown with the image of a clown, parade with the image of a march, and curtain with the image of a curtain.
Inspired by Kutani ware, I want to make a vessel using Japanese paints.
Starting from that idea, we make everything from the development of paints, soil, design, and glazes to our own originals.
Originally, the Japanese paint used in Kutani ware would peel off if the soil was not compatible.
Therefore, at Potperry, we thought that if we developed paints, we would be able to make pottery that does not peel off, so we started with research on paints, and then thoroughly explored the soil that was compatible with the paints that we had developed so that they would not peel off.

〇bitte
Bitte, which means "early in the morning" in Swedish, is characterized by vivid yellow and refreshing blue lines inspired by early summer mornings. This is an original series of plates and bowls made by French glass manufacturer DURAREX by hand, one by one at Potperry's Tokyo Kobo.
With a wide lineup of bowls and plates of different sizes, it is a glass vessel that brings a refreshing feeling to the food to the dining table.
